The late Frances R. Darner

New Fund in Honor of Middletown Local Frances Darner

January 27, 2010: Frances Darner spent her life hoping to make someone else’s journey a little easier. Sadly, on August 31, 2008, Miss Darner’s life ended, but her will to improve someone else’s life continues to live on with the help of her first cousin, Rebecca Guyton. On December 30, 2009, in cooperation with The Community Foundation of Frederick County, Rebecca Guyton and husband Merle L. Guyton created The Frances R. Darner Scholarship Fund in honor of the late Frances Darner.

A native of Middletown, Maryland, Miss Darner was a devoted member of Christ Reformed Church in Middletown and was employed at the Potomac Edison Company in Frederick for 46 years. She was a life-long member of the Middletown Valley Grange where she was secretary and was also active in the county, state, and national Grange. “She was held in highest regard by all of her associates.” says Mrs. Guyton of her cousin Frances.

Mr. and Mrs. Guyton created this fund in Darner’s name to honor her giving spirit and community involvement. The Frances R. Darner Scholarship Fund will provide scholarships annually to deserving students determined by the qualifications set forth by the Community Foundation. This scholarship has no residency requirement. Preference is shown to applicants who have demonstrated a positive commitment to their community through volunteer work, extra- curricular activities, and participation in character- building programs. The first scholarship is to be awarded for the 2011- 2012 academic year.

The Community Foundation of Frederick County has been assisting community members honor loved ones through giving back since 1986. Over one-fourth of the 600-plus funds held by the Community Foundation honor the memories of deceased loved ones by providing funds designated for any number of causes.
