Community Foundation Awards Scholarships to
Urbana Area Students

October 20, 2009: The Community Foundation recently awarded more than $330,000 in scholarship funding throughout Frederick County for the 2009-2010 academic year. Over 200 students received scholarships to pursue their educational dreams, including 21 students from the Urbana area:

Russell Andrews, a 2009 Urbana High School graduate, received The Elaine A. Heiberg Scholarship for the Arts awarded to students who are interested in a career in the arts, including visual, performing, literary, and structural areas. Mr. Andrews attends Carnegie Mellon University.

Haley Ball, a 2009 Urbana High School graduate, received The Charles Thomas and Mary Ellen Main Scholarship awarded to Frederick County residents who show financial need, and academic promise. Ms. Ball attends University of Maryland.

Rixey Browning, a 2009 Urbana High School graduate, received The Lisa A. Orndorff Lajewski Memorial Scholarship awarded to graduates of Brunswick High School or members of All Saints’ Episcopal Church. Ms. Browning attends Bard College.

Jennifer Caffrey, a 2007 Urbana High School graduate, received The R. Perry and Ethel Beckley Scholarship awarded to students pursuing any major. Ms. Caffrey attends College of the Holy Cross.

Jonathan Crandall, a 2008 Urbana High School graduate, received The Nancy Watkins Winterberg Memorial Scholarship for New Market United Methodist Church awarded to students who are members of the church. Mr. Crandall attends James Madison University.

Ronjohn Dadd, a 2009 Urbana High School graduate, received The Billy Gaines Athletic Excellence Scholarship awarded to student/athletes. Mr. Dadd attends Bucknell University.

Hannah Fix, a 2009 Urbana High School graduate, received The Michael David Hendrix Memorial Scholarship awarded to Urbana High School or Glenelg Country School graduates, with preference given to those studying information technology, the sciences, music, or the arts. Ms. Fix attends Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

Patrick Georgi, a 2009 Urbana High School graduate, received The Ernest W. Ausherman Scholarship awarded to students residing in Frederick County. Mr. Georgi attends Virginia Tech.

Rachael Gnatowski, a 2009 Urbana High School graduate, received The Christine LaRoi Memorial Scholarship awarded with preference given to Urbana High School graduating seniors who are interested in the performing arts. Ms. Gnatowski attends Mercyhurst College.

Jennifer Halliday, a 2009 Urbana High School graduate, received The Rollins J. and Mary Marceline Atkinson Scholarship awarded to Frederick County residents pursuing a degree, preferably in journalism with the intention of writing professionally. Ms. Halliday attends Ohio University.

Chardae Harris, a 2009 Urbana High School graduate, received The Tyler Dane Murray Scholarship awarded to Urbana High School graduating seniors who exhibit financial need, have participated in athletics, and show academic promise. Ms. Harris attends Penn State University.

Brandon Jones, a 2009 Urbana High School graduate, received The Tyler Dane Murray Scholarship awarded to Urbana High School graduating seniors who exhibit financial need, have participated in athletics, and show academic promise. Mr. Jones attends Grove City College.

Mary Kneebone, a 2006 Urbana High School graduate, received The Mary E.M and Ruth E. Smith Scholarship awarded to Frederick County residents with preference given to education majors. Ms. Kneebone attends Salisbury University.

So Lee, a 2009 Urbana High School graduate, received The Anthony M. Natelli Memorial Scholarship awarded to Urbana High School graduating seniors with exemplary community service. Ms. Lee attends University of Maryland.

Jason Moyer, a 2009 Urbana High School graduate, received The R. Perry and Ethel Beckley Scholarship awarded to students pursuing any major. Mr. Moyer attends George Washington University.

Benjamin Murphy, a 2007 Urbana High School graduate, received The Frederick County Agriculture Scholarship awarded to Frederick County residents pursuing a degree in agriculture or a related field, The Ralph and Annabelle Lenhart Scholarship awarded to Frederick County residents, with preference given to students studying the building trades, agriculture, animal science, or architecture, and The Dudrow Scholarship awarded to Frederick County residents pursuing a degree in agriculture or a related field. Mr. Murphy attends Ohio State University.

Anna Pampori, a 2009 Urbana High School graduate, received The Tyler Dane Murray Scholarship awarded to Urbana High School graduating seniors who exhibit financial need, have participated in athletics, and show academic promise. Ms. Pampori attends University of Maryland Baltimore County.

Melanie Patterson, a 2009 Urbana High School graduate, received The Tyler Dane Murray Scholarship awarded to Urbana High School graduating seniors who exhibit financial need, have participated in athletics, and show academic promise. Ms. Patterson attends Frederick Community College.

Leon Straus, a 2009 Urbana High School graduate, received The Tyler Dane Murray Scholarship awarded to Urbana High School graduating seniors who exhibit financial need, have participated in athletics, and show academic promise. Mr. Straus attends University of Maryland Baltimore County.

Alexander Utt, a 2009 Urbana High School graduate, received The Frederick County High School Football 110% Scholarship awarded to graduating high school seniors who have participated in interscholastic football at the high school level, including their senior year. Mr. Utt attends Lehigh University.

Regina Zolbrod, a 2009 Urbana High School graduate, received The Captain John Ryan Dennison Scholarship awarded to Urbana or Linganore High Schools graduating scholar/athletes with preference given to students who participate in at least one varsity sport during their senior year and have an outstanding record of community service. Ms. Zolbrod attends Catholic University of America.

Since 1986, the Community Foundation has worked with individuals, families, businesses, associations, and nonprofits to establish charitable funds that benefit a variety of causes, including 195 scholarship funds. The Community Foundation of Frederick County Universal Comprehensive Scholarship Application for the 2010-2011 academic year will be available beginning December 15, 2009 at www.cffredco.org.
