First Scholarships Awarded From Coach Bob Sheffler/Middletown High School Soccer 
Alumni Scholarship Fund

July 31, 2009: The Community Foundation of Frederick County is pleased to announce that the first Coach Bob Sheffler/Middletown High School Soccer Alumni Scholarships have been awarded to 2009 Middletown High School graduates Chase Nichols and Luis Beltran.

During high school, Luis Beltran was a member of the Homework Help Club and the Boys Varsity Soccer team. He also volunteers at Community Help, a faith-based volunteer group that helps those in need. Luis will study Computer Science at Mount St. Mary’s University. Chase Nichols also played on the Boys Varsity Soccer team and was selected to the MACS All-State Soccer Team in both his junior and senior seasons. He served as a physical education intern at Myersville Elementary School during his senior year. Chase will study Physical Education at Salisbury University and continue his soccer career at the collegiate level.

The Middletown High School Soccer Alumni honored Coach Sheffler’s 35 years of dedication to coaching by raising funds to create The Coach Bob Sheffler/Middletown High School Soccer Alumni Scholarship Fund at the Community Foundation. The Fund provides scholarships to graduating seniors of Middletown High School who have participated in varsity soccer during their senior year to aid them in their pursuit of a college education.

Coach Sheffler says that both Luis and Chase represent the best of both academic and athletic excellence. “I am pleased that the first scholarships from the Fund have been awarded to these two outstanding students. I know they will make the most of their education.”

Since 1986, generous citizens have turned to the Community Foundation to establish charitable funds that award scholarships to deserving students and grants to area nonprofit organizations. To date, more than $22 million has been awarded throughout Frederick County.
