Community Foundation Awards Scholarships
October 8, 2009: The Community Foundation of Frederick County recently
awarded more than $330,000 in scholarship funding throughout Frederick
County for the 2009-2010 academic year. Over 200 students received
scholarships to pursue their educational dreams, including 11 students
from outside Frederick County. These scholars include:
Ross Cochran, Amanda Lauer, Lauren Murphy, and Sarah Simmons received
The Ashley Tamburri Scholarship awarded to students who are cancer
survivors or are currently coping with a cancer diagnosis at the time
of application. Mr. Cochran attends York College of Pennsylvania. Ms.
Lauer attends Maryland Institute College of Art. Ms. Murphy attends
Towson University. Ms. Simmons attends Towson University.
Ann Czapski received The Dr. Gerry McGreevy Scholarship awarded to
graduates of Bishop Walsh High School who are attending Mount Saint
Mary’s University.
Tyler Hanshew received The Cresap’s Rifles Post 78, 29th Division
Scholarship awarded to children and grandchildren of current and
former members of the 29th Infantry Division. Mr. Hanshew attends
Hagerstown Community College.
Christina Hatt received The Norine Haas Mental Health Scholarship
awarded to unpaid interns in Counseling Services, a Mental Health
Association program. For scholars in their final year of graduate
school, scholarships may repay graduate school loans. Ms. Hatt has
earned a Master of Science in Clinical Psychology from Loyola College
in Maryland.
Ross Holland received The Ka’la Louise Trout Memorial Scholarship
awarded to graduating seniors from Littlestown High School. Mr.
Holland attends Penn State Mont Alto.
Regina Kieninger, a 2009 graduate of St. John’s Catholic Prep,
received The Dr. Christopher M. Hassett Science Scholarship for St.
John’s Catholic Prep awarded to St. John’s Catholic Prep graduating
seniors who are majoring in one of the physical sciences. Ms.
Kieninger attends College of William and Mary.
Rosalynne Sommer received The Maryland Sign Association Memorial
Scholarship awarded to current members of Maryland Sign Association
Inc., their employees, and dependents. Ms. Sommer attends University
of Delaware.
John Whitson received The Peter Anthony Lapera Memorial Scholarship
for the Jefferson School awarded to students who have attended or are
attending the Jefferson School or its satellite schools and programs
in other Maryland locations. Mr. Whitson attends Montgomery College.
Since 1986, the Community Foundation has worked with individuals,
families, businesses, associations, and nonprofits to establish
charitable funds that benefit a variety of causes, including 195
scholarship funds. The Community Foundation of Frederick County
Universal Comprehensive Scholarship Application for the 2010-2011
academic year will be available beginning December 15, 2009 at
