Honors Dedicated Volunteer
October 30, 2009: From a young age,
Nathan McDaniel loved animals. It was this passion that led him in
2006 to become a volunteer with Animal Welfare League of Frederick
County (AWLFC). From fostering cats to organizing fundraisers to
recruiting new members, Nathan worked diligently to support AWLFC’s
efforts to end pet homelessness in Frederick County. His dedication
helped many animals and inspired his fellow volunteers.
Nathan McDaniel’s untimely death in December 2008 was a loss felt
deeply by everyone involved with AWLFC. “None of us will ever forget
Nathan,” explains Mary Elizabeth Hiatt, President. “He was a tireless
volunteer.”
McDaniel included AWLFC as a beneficiary of his estate, leaving a
legacy gift that will assure the long-term viability of this
organization that focuses on all areas of animal well-being. Hiatt
remarked when talking of McDonald’s planned gift, “Nathan’s bequest
will enable AFLFC to greatly expand the number of animals and people
we can help in Frederick County.”
AWLFC used a portion of McDaniel’s bequest to establish a fund in his
memory with The Community Foundation of Frederick County. “Starting
this fund is a way to commemorate Nathan’s service to our organization
and his commitment to animal welfare,” Hiatt states. “It is the AWLFC
Board of Directors’ desire to keep his legacy alive and to continue
his work helping animals through this fund in his name.”
Having been a recipient of Community Foundation funds in the past,
AWLFC was confident in its decision. “We felt that people would
support our group and its long-term viability if they knew that their
funds were being managed by a solid organization such as the Community
Foundation,” Hiatt explains. “This permanent fund gives us peace of
mind, knowing that our funds are in good hands.”
Providing peace of mind through professional fund management is what
the Community Foundation has been doing since 1986. Over one-fourth of
the 600-plus funds held by the Community Foundation honor the memories
of deceased loved ones by providing funding designated for any number
of causes throughout Frederick County. To date, the Community
Foundation has given back more than $23 million in grants and
scholarships.
