Community Foundation Awards Scholarships to
Middletown Area Students
September 25, 2009: The Community Foundation recently awarded more
than $330,000 in scholarship funding throughout Frederick County for
the 2009-2010 academic year. Over 200 students received scholarships
to pursue their educational dreams, including 31 students from the
Middletown area:
Luis Beltran, a 2009 Middletown High School graduate, received The
Coach Bob Sheffler/Middletown High School Soccer Alumni Scholarship
awarded to Middletown High School graduating seniors who have
participated in varsity soccer during their senior year and The
Progreso Latino Scholarship awarded to graduates of Frederick County
Public Schools, with preference given to those who are of Latino
Heritage. Mr. Beltran attends Mount Saint Mary’s University.
Brant Beswick, a 2009 Middletown High School graduate, received The
William A. Simmons Scholarship awarded to Frederick County residents
pursuing a career in graphic arts, printing or publishing. Mr. Beswick
attends Pennsylvania College of Technology.
Katie Billotti, a 2008 Middletown High School graduate, received The
Philip I. Winters Scholarship awarded to Middletown High School
graduates pursuing a degree in education. Ms. Billotti attends Towson
University.
Kayla Boring, a 2009 Middletown High School graduate, received The
Garrett R. Petronchak Memorial Scholarship awarded to Frederick County
graduating seniors who participate in alcohol and other substance
abuse prevention programs. Ms. Boring attends Randolph-Macon College.
Sarah Burdette, a 2008 Middletown High School graduate, received The
Ester E. Grinage Scholarship awarded with preference given to early
childhood education majors, and The Mary E.M. and Ruth E. Smith
Scholarship awarded to Frederick County residents with preference
given to education majors. Ms. Burdette attends Shippensburg
University.
Andrea Christ, a 2009 Middletown High School graduate, received The
C.G.F. Francie Billotti-Wood Scholarship awarded to Middletown High
School graduates with special consideration given to students pursuing
a career in nonprofits, and The Derek Matthew Angel Scholarship with
preference given to Frederick County residents studying information
technology. Ms. Christ attends Salisbury University.
Paige Covell, a 2009 Middletown High School graduate, received The
Hulda E. Holter Scholarship awarded to graduates of Brunswick or
Middletown High Schools majoring in nursing. Ms. Covell attends
Salisbury University.
Adam Dulberger, a 2009 Middletown High School graduate, received The
Frederick County High School Football 110% Scholarship awarded to
graduating high school seniors who have participated in
interscholastic football at the high school level, including their
senior year. Mr. Dulberger attends Davidson University.
James Greene, a 2008 Middletown High School graduate, received The
Korean War Veterans Chapter 142 Scholarship awarded to direct
bloodline descendants of any person who actively served in a branch of
the United States military and who are eligible for membership in the
Korean War Veterans Association and were not dishonorably discharged,
and The Rotary Club of Frederick Scholarship awarded to Frederick
County residents based upon an equal weighting of academic excellence,
financial need and community service. Mr. Greene attends Wheaton
College.
Amanda Grossnickle, a 2009 Middletown High School graduate, received
The Roberta Timmons Cannon Memorial Art Scholarship awarded to
Frederick County residents planning to pursue a degree in the visual
arts. Ms. Grossnickle attends Messiah College.
Juliann Grossnickle, a 2007 Middletown High School graduate, received
The Mary E.M. and Ruth E. Smith Scholarship awarded to Frederick
County residents with preference given to education majors, and The
Mary Alice and Richard E. Markey Scholarship awarded to Frederick
County residents pursuing a four-year degree in education or art. Ms.
Grossnickle attends Messiah College.
Carrie Hightman, a 2007 Middletown High School graduate, received The
Merle L. and Ruth Rebecca Guyton Scholarship awarded to students who
demonstrate their faith through good citizenship, service to others
and the community, with preference given to those pursuing a degree in
the medical or law enforcement fields. Ms. Hightman attends University
of the Sciences in Philadelphia.
Eric Hodge, a 2009 Middletown High School graduate, received The
Margaret and Robert Guyton Scholarship awarded to Frederick County
residents, with preference given to Middletown High School graduating
seniors attending a trade or technical school or entering a
certificate program to master a manual trade. Mr. Hodge attends The
Culinary Institute of America.
Adam Holter, a 2008 Middletown High School graduate, received The J.
Wilmer “Pete” and Margaret Holter House Memorial Scholarship awarded
to Frederick County residents who have graduated or are graduating
from Middletown High School with preference given to students pursuing
an education in agriculture, animal husbandry or a related field. Mr.
Holter attends Shepherd University.
Sarah Huffer, a 2006 Middletown High School graduate, received The
Elaine A. Heiberg Scholarship for the Arts awarded to students who are
interested in a career in the arts, including visual, performing,
literary, and structural areas. Ms. Huffer attends McDaniel College.
Ross Jones, a 2009 Middletown High School graduate, received The Lisa
A. Orndorff Lajewski Memorial Scholarship awarded to graduates of
Brunswick High School or members of All Saints’ Episcopal Church, and
The Ernest W. Ausherman Scholarship awarded to students residing in
Frederick County. Mr. Jones attends Frederick Community College.
Samual Michalak received The Ashley Tamburri Scholarship awarded to
students who are cancer survivors or are currently coping with a
cancer diagnosis at the time of application. Mr. Michalak attends
Allegheny College.
Jared Neahusan, a 2009 Middletown High School graduate, received The
Charles Thomas and Mary Ellen Main Scholarship awarded to Frederick
County residents who show financial need, and academic promise. Mr.
Neahusan attends Appalachian State University.
Charles Nichols, a 2009 Middletown High School graduate, received The
Coach Bob Sheffler/Middletown High School Soccer Alumni Scholarship
awarded to Middletown High School graduating seniors who have
participated in varsity soccer during their senior year. Mr. Nichols
attends Salisbury University.
Joseph Pirrone, a 2008 Middletown High School graduate, received The
Joseph F. Brown Scholarship awarded to residents of Frederick County,
with preference given to Middletown High School graduates studying in
any of the disciplines related to land surveying, such as mathematics,
geology, or physics. Mr. Pirrone attends University of Maryland.
Bethany Rindhart, a 2008 Middletown High School graduate, received The
Bonnie Kitchen Hinkle Memorial Scholarship awarded to Middletown High
School graduates pursuing bachelor degrees in nursing. Ms. Rindhart
attends Towson University.
Caitlin Selzer, a 2008 Middletown High School graduate, received The
Mary E. M. and Ruth E. Smith Scholarship awarded to Frederick County
residents with preference given to education majors. Ms. Selzer
attends Maryland Institute College of Art.
Rebecca Selzer received The Rotary Club of Frederick Scholarship
awarded to Frederick County residents based upon an equal weighting of
academic excellence, financial need and community service. Ms. Selzer
attends University of Maryland.
Jessica Smith, a 2009 Middletown High School graduate, received The
Elaine A. Heiberg Scholarship for the Arts awarded to students who are
interested in a career in the arts, including visual, performing,
literary, and structural areas. Ms. Smith attends Columbia College
Chicago.
Juli Sullivan, a 2008 Middletown High School graduate, received The
Nancy Nicodemus Franck Scholarship awarded to Frederick Community
College students who are Frederick County high school graduates or
Frederick County residents studying Elementary Education.
Susan Summers, a 2009 Middletown High School graduate, received The
Elaine A. Heiberg Scholarship for the Arts awarded to students who are
interested in a career in the arts, including visual, performing,
literary, and structural areas. Ms. Summers attends The Peabody
Institute of Johns Hopkins University.
Aislinn Sweeney, a 2008 Middletown High School graduate, received The
William D. Hammond Scholarship awarded to Frederick County residents,
with preference given to students studying accounting or a related
field. Ms. Sweeney attends Salisbury University.
Megan Thomas, a 2009 Middletown High School graduate, received The
Jessica Lee Murphy Memorial Scholarship awarded to Frederick County
high school graduating seniors with preference given to volleyball
players and those with a safe driving record, and The Maryland Sign
Association Memorial Scholarship awarded to current members of
Maryland Sign Association Inc., their employees, and dependents. Ms.
Thomas attends Bridgemont Community & Technical College.
Jennifer Traube, a 2006 Middletown High School graduate, received The
Mary E.M. and Ruth E. Smith Scholarship awarded to Frederick County
residents with preference given to education majors. Ms. Traube
attends Duquesne University.
Sherryl Watkins received The Martha Murphy Virts Nursing Scholarship
awarded to nursing majors. Ms. Watkins attends Frederick Community
College.
Jessica Young, a 2002 Middletown High School graduate, received The
Frederick Medical Foundation Scholarship awarded to Frederick County
residents majoring in medicine, dentistry and/or nursing, The Hulda E.
Holter Scholarship awarded to graduates of Brunswick or Middletown
High Schools majoring in nursing, and The Edgar and Mildred Larson
Scholarship awarded to Frederick County residents studying at
Frederick Community College.
Since 1986, the Community Foundation has worked with individuals,
families, businesses, associations, and nonprofits to establish
charitable funds that benefit a variety of causes, including 195
scholarship funds. The Community Foundation of Frederick County
Universal Comprehensive Scholarship Application for the 2010-2011
academic year will be available beginning December 15, 2009 at
