Community Foundation Awards Scholarships to
Frederick Area Students
September 21, 2009: The Community Foundation recently awarded more
than $330,000 in scholarship funding throughout Frederick County for
the 2009-2010 academic year. Over 200 students received scholarships
to pursue their educational dreams, including 50 students from the
Frederick area:
Abenaa Acheampong, a 2007 Frederick High School graduate, received The
William E. Colliver Memorial Scholarship awarded to Frederick County
residents studying health sciences and/or the performing arts, with
preference given to University of Maryland undergraduate students and
The Frederick Medical Foundation Scholarship awarded to Frederick
County residents majoring in medicine, dentistry and/or nursing. Ms.
Acheampong attends University of Maryland.
Ryan Bonheyo, a 2009 Maryland School for the Deaf graduate, received
The Frederick County High School Football 110% Scholarship awarded to
graduating seniors who have participated in interscholastic football
at the high school level, including their senior year. Mr. Bonheyo
attends Towson University.
Patricia Bowers received The Frederick Medical Foundation Scholarship
awarded to Frederick County residents majoring in medicine, dentistry
and/or nursing. Ms. Bowers attends Frederick Community College.
Aimee Briggs, a 2009 Frederick High School graduate, received The Don
and Rosa Rippeon Scholarship awarded to Frederick County graduates
with preference given to students pursuing a career in early childhood
education and agriculture and The Nicholas B. Jarvis Memorial
Scholarship awarded to Frederick County residents who are graduating
seniors from Frederick High School, Urbana High School, and/or
Tuscarora High School with preference given to students who intend to
have a career in forestry, agriculture, land management, veterinary
medicine, marine biology, early childhood education, sports medicine,
history and/or science. Ms. Briggs attends Towson University.
Bresha Calloway, a 2009 Frederick High School graduate, received The
William B. Price, Jr. Scholarship awarded to Frederick High School
graduating seniors with preference given to students who participated
in high school cross-country or track and The Kenneth W. Parker-Class
of ’55 Scholarship awarded to Frederick County graduating seniors. Ms.
Calloway attends Mount Saint Mary’s University.
Charles Cizek, a 2009 Frederick High School graduate, received The
John and Ginny Greene Music Scholarship awarded to Frederick High
School graduates studying music or a related field. Mr. Cizek attends
Towson University.
Kari Cole, a 2009 Governor Thomas Johnson High School graduate,
received The Barry D. Richardson Memorial Scholarship for the Visual
Arts awarded to Frederick County residents attending Frederick
Community College with preference given to students pursuing a career
related to the visual arts, including art education, art therapy,
graphic design, and photography.
Elizabeth Corker, a 2007 St. John’s Catholic Prep graduate, received
The Roger F. Nicodemus Theatre Scholarship awarded to Frederick County
residents who show an interest and active participation in theatre and
demonstrate financial need. Ms. Corker attends University of Maryland
Baltimore County
Cally Daschback, a 2009 St. John’s Catholic Prep graduate, received
The William O. Lee, Jr. and Family Scholarship awarded to graduating
high school seniors who reside in the City of Frederick. Ms. Daschback
attends Towson University.
Thomas DeSirant, a 2009 New Life Christian School graduate, received
The Shangri-La Detachment Marine Corps League Scholarship awarded with
preference given to members of the Shangri-La Detachment Marine Corps
League, blood relatives of a member, and/or Frederick County residents
who are blood relatives of current or former Marines. Mr. DeSirant
attends Geneva College.
Noah Duckett, a 2009 Governor Thomas Johnson High School graduate,
received The Kenneth W. Parker-Class of ’55 Scholarship awarded to
Frederick County graduating seniors. Mr. Duckett attends Mars Hill
College.
Megan Duncan, a 2008 Governor Thomas Johnson High School graduate,
received The Dustin Muse Scholar/Athlete Scholarship awarded to
Governor Thomas Johnson High School graduating scholar/athletes who
demonstrate leadership skills and a dedication to community service.
Ms. Duncan attends Penn State University.
Keegan Eichelman, a 2009 St. John’s Catholic Prep graduate, received
The Fund for Catholic Education/Kindergarten through University
Scholarship awarded to students attending Mount Saint Mary’s
University.
Isabel Finkelstein, a 2009 Governor Thomas Johnson High School
graduate, received The Henry E. Droneburg, III Memorial Scholarship
awarded to Governor Thomas Johnson High School graduates, with
preference given to those studying the visual arts. Ms. Finkelstein
attends St. Mary’s College of Maryland.
Jennifer Foit, a 2008 Governor Thomas Johnson High School graduate,
received The Dustin Muse Scholar/Athlete Scholarship awarded to
Governor Thomas Johnson High School graduating scholar/athletes who
demonstrate leadership skills and a dedication to community service.
Ms. Foit attends University of Maryland.
Nina Fortson received The Mary E.M. and Ruth E. Smith Scholarship
awarded to Frederick County residents with preference given to
education majors. Ms. Fortson attends Hood College.
Erica Fritz received The Rotary Club of Frederick Scholarship awarded
to Frederick County residents based upon an equal weighting of
academic excellence, financial need and community service. Ms. Fritz
attends Liberty University.
Qiyama Graham, a 2008 Frederick High School graduate, received The
Mary E.M. and Ruth E. Smith Scholarship awarded to Frederick County
residents with preference given to education majors. Ms. Graham
attends Frederick Community College.
Alexandra Gushard-Edwards, a 2009 Governor Thomas Johnson High School
graduate, received The Barry D. Richardson Memorial Scholarship for
the Visual Arts awarded to Frederick County residents attending
Frederick Community College with preference given to students pursuing
a career related to the visual arts, including art education, art
therapy, graphic design, and photography.
Jill Guthridge, a 2009 Governor Thomas Johnson High School graduate,
received The Dustin Muse Scholar/Athlete Scholarship awarded to
Governor Thomas Johnson High School graduating scholar/athletes who
demonstrate leadership skills and a dedication to community service.
Ms. Guthridge attends University of Maryland.
Logan Heckman, a 2009 Frederick High School graduate, received The
James R. Seek, Jr. Memorial Scholarship awarded to Frederick County
residents, with preference given to Frederick High School, Urbana High
School, and/or Tuscarora High School graduates, The Frederick High
School Centennial Scholarship awarded to graduating seniors or alumnus
from Frederick High School, The R. Perry and Ethel Beckley Scholarship
awarded to students pursuing any major and The Chief Charles V. Main
Scholarship awarded to Frederick County residents pursuing a career in
criminal justice or public safety. Mr. Heckman attends West Virginia
University.
Daniel Hess, a 2009 Governor Thomas Johnson High School graduate,
received The Lisa A. Orndorff Lajewski Memorial Scholarship awarded to
graduates of Brunswick High School or members of All Saints’ Episcopal
Church. Mr. Hess attends Hood College.
Brooke Hogan, a 2008 Governor Thomas Johnson High School graduate,
received The Mary E.M. and Ruth E. Smith Scholarship awarded to
Frederick County residents with preference given to education majors.
Ms. Hogan attends McDaniel College.
Dwayne Jenkins, a 2009 Governor Thomas Johnson High School graduate,
received The Frederick County High School Football 110% Scholarship
awarded to graduating high school seniors who have participated in
interscholastic football at the high school level, including their
senior year. Mr. Jenkins attends Randolph-Macon College.
Neha Kapoor, a 2008 Frederick High School graduate, received The
Rotary Club of Frederick Scholarship awarded to Frederick County
residents based upon an equal weighting of academic excellence,
financial need and community service. Ms. Kapoor attends University of
Maryland Baltimore County.
Lalhu Lian, a 2009 Frederick High School graduate, received The BMK
Architectural Scholarship awarded to graduating seniors from
Frederick, Carroll, or Washington County, with preference given to
students studying architecture or a related design field. Mr. Lian
attends Frederick Community College.
Matthew Larsen, a 2009 Governor Thomas Johnson High School graduate,
received The Dustin Muse Scholar/Athlete Scholarship awarded to
Governor Thomas Johnson High School graduating scholar/athletes who
demonstrate leadership skills and a dedication to community service.
Mr. Larsen attends Salisbury University.
Roberto Leiva, a 2009 Governor Thomas Johnson High School graduate,
received The Progreso Latino Scholarship awarded to graduates of
Frederick County Public Schools, with preference given to those who
are of Latino Heritage. Mr. Leiva attends Frederick Community College.
Tyler Martin, a 2009 Frederick High School graduate, received The
Luster and Jean Oxley Scholarship awarded to Frederick County Public
School graduates attending a college or university located in
Maryland. Mr. Martin attends McDaniel College.
Kiersten Miller, a 2009 Frederick High School graduate, received The
Julia D. Stine Memorial Scholarship awarded to students continuing
their education at Salisbury University with preference given to the
following majors in this order: education, nursing, psychology,
sociology or social work.
Brooke Molesworth, a 2009 Governor Thomas Johnson High School
graduate, received The Charles Thomas and Mary Ellen Main Scholarship
awarded to Frederick County residents who show financial need, and
academic promise. Ms. Molesworth attends Frederick Community College.
Azkia Mujeeb, a 2009 Frederick High School graduate, received The
Warner L. “Mike” Brittain/Seneca Football Association Scholarship
awarded to Frederick High School graduates attending any college in
Maryland, Shepherd College, or Gettysburg College and The Dr. Rex R.
and Ann Martin Scholarship awarded to Frederick High School graduates
enrolled at Hood College.
Isabel Murdock, a 2009 Frederick High School graduate, received The
Frederick Medical Foundation Scholarship awarded to Frederick County
residents majoring in medicine, dentistry and/or nursing and The
Frederick Elks Lodge #684 Youth Endowment Scholarship awarded to
Frederick County high school graduating seniors attending Frederick
Community College.
Jake Nichols, a 2008 Governor Thomas Johnson High School graduate,
received The Dustin Muse Scholar/Athlete Scholarship awarded to
Governor Thomas Johnson High School graduating scholar/athletes who
demonstrate leadership skills and a dedication to community service.
Mr. Nichols attends McDaniel College.
John Noble received The Ashley Tamburri Scholarship awarded to
students who are cancer survivors or are currently coping with a
cancer diagnosis at the time of application. Mr. Noble attends Art
Institute of Pittsburgh.
Corinne Nunez, a 2003 Governor Thomas Johnson High School graduate,
received The Maryland Retired School Personnel Association Scholarship
awarded to assist non-certified employees in the Maryland public
school systems to obtain teacher certification in Maryland. Ms. Nunez
attends Johns Hopkins University.
Sarah Oden, a 2009 Governor Thomas Johnson High School graduate,
received The Barry D. Richardson Memorial Scholarship for the Visual
Arts awarded to Frederick County residents attending Frederick
Community College with preference given to students pursuing a career
related to the visual arts, including art education, art therapy,
graphic design, and photography.
Laura Overs, a 2008 Governor Thomas Johnson High School graduate,
received The Lisa A. Orndorff Lajewski Memorial Scholarship awarded to
graduates of Brunswick High School or members of All Saints’ Episcopal
Church. Ms. Overs attends Bethel College.
Julia Overs, a 2006 Governor Thomas Johnson High School graduate,
received The Lisa A. Orndorff Lajewski Memorial Scholarship awarded to
graduates of Brunswick High School or members of All Saints’ Episcopal
Church. Ms. Overs attends Calvin College.
Lauren Parsons, a 2006 St. John’s Catholic Prep graduate, received The
Mary E.M. and Ruth E. Smith Scholarship awarded to Frederick County
residents with preference given to education majors. Ms. Parsons
attends College of Notre Dame of Maryland.
Maura Rose, a 2008 Governor Thomas Johnson High School graduate,
received The Robert and Winifred Mount Scholarship awarded to
graduates of Governor Thomas Johnson High School, with preference
given to students pursuing a career in education or nursing. Ms. Rose
attends University of Pittsburgh.
Kelly Savannah, a 2006 Frederick High School graduate, received The
Mary E.M. and Ruth E. Smith Scholarship awarded to Frederick County
residents with preference given to education majors. Ms. Savannah
attends Hood College
Amanda Sentelle received The Glenn E. and Helen H. Biehl Scholarship
awarded to Frederick County residents continuing their education past
high school at Frederick Community College and The James and Melinda
Lautenberger Scholarship awarded to Frederick County residents
pursuing a career in accounting, health care, or one of the physical
sciences at Frederick Community College.
Julia Shatto, a 2006 Governor Thomas Johnson High School graduate,
received The Robert F. Nicodemus Theatre Scholarship awarded to
Frederick County residents who show an interest and active
participation in theatre and demonstrate financial need, and The Mary
E.M. and Ruth E. Smith Scholarship awarded to Frederick County
residents with preference given to education majors. Ms. Shatto
attends St. Mary’s College of Maryland.
Scott Shatto, a 2009 Governor Thomas Johnson High School graduate,
received The Lawrence M. and Betty Agatha Powell Scholarship awarded
to graduating Governor Thomas Johnson High School scholar/athletes who
participated in a varsity sport during their senior year and who
demonstrate leadership, good citizenship, and academic promise. Mr.
Shatto attends St. Mary’s College of Maryland.
Melanie Springer, a 2009 Governor Thomas Johnson High School graduate,
received The Jessica Lee Murphy Memorial Scholarship awarded to
Frederick County high school graduating seniors with preference given
to volleyball players and those with a safe driving record. Ms.
Springer attends Rochester Institute of Technology.
Erin Spurrier, a 2007 Frederick High School graduate, received The
Rotary Club of Frederick Scholarship awarded to Frederick County
residents based upon an equal weighting of academic excellence,
financial need and community service and The Alma Crebs Sharrer
Scholarship awarded to Frederick High School graduates who are
residents of Frederick County and attended South Frederick/Lincoln
Elementary School. Ms. Spurrier attends Frederick Community College.
Laura Swick, a 2009 Frederick High School graduate, received The
Frederick Medical Foundation Scholarship awarded to Frederick County
residents majoring in medicine, dentistry and/or nursing. Ms. Swick
attends Hood College.
Harryson Tun, a 2009 Frederick High School graduate, received The
Kenneth W. Parker-Class of ’55 Scholarship awarded to Frederick County
graduating seniors. Mr. Tun attends Frederick Community College.
Andrew Zimnik, a 2009 Frederick High School graduate, received The
Frederick County High School Football 110% Scholarship awarded to
graduating high school seniors who have participated in
interscholastic football at the high school level, including their
senior year, The Korean War Veterans Chapter 142 Scholarship awarded
to direct bloodline descendants of any person who actively served in a
branch of the United States military and who are eligible for
membership in the Korean War Veterans Association and were not
dishonorably discharged and The Ryan Patrick Murray Memorial
Scholarship awarded with preference given to Frederick County
graduating seniors, who exhibit good character, and who participated
in varsity baseball during their senior year. Mr. Zimnik attends
University of Pittsburgh.
Since 1986, the Community Foundation has worked with individuals,
families, businesses, associations, and nonprofits to establish
charitable funds that benefit a variety of causes, including 195
scholarship funds. The Community Foundation of Frederick County
Universal Comprehensive Scholarship Application for the 2010-2011
academic year will be available beginning December 15, 2009 at
