Community Foundation Accepting
Music Instruction Scholarship Applications through May 1

February 27, 2009: Now through May 1, 2009, students five to eighteen years old pursuing vocal or instrumental music instruction may apply for scholarships through two specific funds held by The Community Foundation of Frederick County.

The Sperry L. Storm Memorial Scholarship is available for Frederick County Public Schools students in kindergarten through 11th grade for training in vocal or instrumental music performance. The scholarship is made possible through The Sperry L. Storm Memorial Scholarship Fund, which honors the memory of Mr. Storm, a well-known Frederick County musician who taught music privately for nearly 50 years and worked as a public school music educator for 35 years. Scholarships are for private instruction only.

The Courtney Muse Music Scholarship aids elementary, middle, and high school students in Frederick County who are pursuing vocal or instrumental music performance. Consideration will also be given to five to eighteen year olds taking private lessons to further career opportunities in these fields. The scholarship honors the memory of Courtney Muse, a member of the Monocacy Middle School Chorus, pianist, and musical theater enthusiast who died in a car accident, along with her brother Dustin, in December 2006. The scholarship is made possible through The Dustin and Courtney Muse Memorial Fund.

Scholarship application guidelines can be downloaded from the scholarship page of the Community Foundation’s or obtained at the Community Foundation’s office at 312 East Church Street in Frederick. Only one application is needed to apply for either of the two scholarships offered. Applications must be delivered to the Community Foundation’s office no later than 5:00 p.m. on Friday, May 1, 2009.

Since 1986, generous citizens have turned to the credibility and expertise of the Community Foundation to establish funds or add to existing funds that provide scholarships to deserving students and grants to worthy nonprofit organizations. To date, the Community Foundation has awarded more than $19 million throughout Frederick County.

Secure, online donations to any of the Community Foundation’s 600+ funds may be made by visiting www.cffredco.org and clicking on “contribute” in the upper right hand corner. All donations are tax deductible to the fullest extent of the law.
