Community Foundation Awards
Scholarships to Catoctin Area Students

September 22, 2009: The Community Foundation recently awarded more than $330,000 in scholarship funding throughout Frederick County for the 2009-2010 academic year. Over 200 students received scholarships to pursue their educational dreams, including 23 students from the Catoctin area:

Benjamin Adelsberger, a 2000 Catoctin High School graduate, receives The Frederick Community College Graduate to Mount St. Mary’s University Scholarship, awarded to graduates of Frederick Community College who are attending Mount Saint Mary’s University.

Katelyn Bailey, a 2009 Catoctin High School graduate, receives The Basford Family Scholarship awarded to Frederick County residents, with preference given to students pursuing careers in technical or trades areas, The U. Mehrl and Margaret T. Hooper Scholarship awarded to Frederick County students studying at trade or technical schools, The James R. Hahn Scholarship awarded with special preference given to transportation majors, and The George Wesley Gilbert Memorial Scholarship awarded to graduates of Frederick County Public Schools continuing their education at trade or technical schools, with preference given to those pursuing dental hygiene, automotive, cosmetology and nurse’s aid certifications. Ms. Bailey attends Lincoln Technical Institute.

Ashley Barber, a 2009 Catoctin High School graduate, receives The Mayor Jim Hoover’s Emmitsburg Scholarship awarded with preference given to students who reside in Emmitsburg. Ms. Barber attends High Point University.

Jennifer Biser, a 2009 Catoctin High School graduate, receives The Mary Ann Moschel Memorial Scholarship awarded to Frederick County graduating seniors interested in pursuing a career in counseling, psychology, education, or human services. Ms. Biser attends James Madison University.

Ashley Coleman, a 2008 Catoctin High School graduate, receives The Frederick Medical Foundation Scholarship awarded to Frederick County residents majoring in medicine, dentistry and/or nursing, The Margaret E. Brust Nursing Scholarship awarded to Frederick County high school graduates majoring in nursing, and The Martha Murphy Virts Nursing Scholarship awarded to nursing majors. Ms. Coleman attends University of Maryland.

Adam Delauter, a 2006 Catoctin High School graduate, receives The Charlie Wood Golf Scholarship awarded to Frederick County high school graduating seniors with preference given to students who have a passion for golf, preferably playing on a golf team. Mr. Delauter attends Shenandoah University.

Victoria Farmer-Long, a 2009 Catoctin High School graduate, receives The Mary Ann Moschel Memorial Scholarship awarded to Frederick County graduating seniors interested in pursuing a career in counseling, psychology, education, or human services. Ms. Farmer-Long attends Hood College.

Maria Fauconnet, a 2009 Catoctin High School graduate, receives The 1LT Robert A. Seidel III Memorial Scholarship awarded to Catoctin High School graduating seniors who have participated in at least one varsity sport during the senior year, have an outstanding record of community service, and actively participate in their faith, and The Nancy Watkins Winterberg Memorial Scholarship for New Market United Methodist Church awarded to students who are members of the church. Ms. Fauconnet attends McDaniel College.

Jared Grimm, a 2009 Catoctin High School graduate, receives The Mayor James F. Black Scholarship awarded to Town of Thurmont's employees and their legal dependents. Mr. Grimm attends McDaniel College.

Jennifer Krietz, a 2007 Catoctin High School graduate, receives The Catoctin Medical Center Scholarship awarded to Catoctin High School graduates who are pursuing a career in the medical or health field, and The Martha Murphy Virts Nursing Scholarship awarded to nursing majors. Ms. Krietz attends Frederick Community College.

Grant Lindahl, a 2009 Catoctin High School graduate, receives The Greater Frederick Advertising Federation Scholarship awarded to Frederick County students pursuing a career in areas such as marketing, advertising, graphic design, public relations, communications, publishing or multi media. Mr. Lindahl attends Maryland Institute College of Art.

Jessica May, a 1999 Catoctin High School graduate, receives The Catoctin Medical Center Scholarship awarded to Catoctin High School graduates who are pursuing a career in the medical or health field. Ms. May attends Kaplan College-Frederick.

Nichole May, receives The Norine Haas Mental Health Scholarship awarded to unpaid interns in Counseling Services, a Mental Health Association program. For scholars in their final year of graduate school, scholarships may repay graduate school loans. Ms. May has earned a Master of Science in Pastoral Counseling from Loyola College in Maryland.

Tyler Miller, a 2009 Catoctin High School graduate, receives The M. Rebecca Linton Scholarship awarded to Frederick County graduating seniors who are enrolled at Frederick Community College.

Amanda Morgan, a 2009 Catoctin High School graduate, receives The Nancy Nicodemus Franck Scholarship awarded to Frederick Community College students who are Frederick County high school graduates or Frederick County residents, with preference given to students studying elementary education. Ms. Morgan attends Frederick Community College.

Megan Olson, a 2009 Catoctin High School graduate, receives The George E. Randall Memorial Scholarship awarded to Frederick County residents who have an interest in journalism and/or photography, with preference given to graduates of Catoctin High School who are attending Frederick Community College and The Frederick County Retired School Personnel Association Scholarship awarded to Frederick County residents with financial need who are pursuing an education degree. Ms. Olson attends Frederick Community College.

Lindsay Puvel, a 2009 Catoctin High School graduate, receives The Ross and Pauline Smith Scholarship awarded to Frederick County residents attending an accredited college or university. Ms. Puvel attends Catholic University.

Chelsea Reese, a 2007 Catoctin High School graduate, receives The Aimee Belle Harper Scholarship awarded to members of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church. Ms. Reese attends Hood College.

Rebecca Richards, a 2009 Catoctin High School graduate, receives The Charles Thomas and Mary Ellen Main Scholarship awarded to Frederick County residents who show financial need, and academic promise. Ms. Richards attends Asbury College.

Kourtney Roman, a 2009 Catoctin High School graduate, receives The Emmitsburg Lions Memorial Scholarship awarded to graduating seniors residing in the Emmitsburg area. Ms. Roman attends Middle Tennessee State University.

Lauren Roop, a 2006 Catoctin High School graduate, receives The Catoctin High School Youth Scholarship awarded to students who have graduated or are graduating from Catoctin High School. Ms. Roop attends Grove City College.

Jonathan Scalese, a 2009 Catoctin High School graduate, receives The Brady West Memorial Scholarship awarded to graduating seniors from Catoctin High School. Mr. Scalese attends Brigham Young University-Hawaii.

Valerie Schmidt, a 2000 Catoctin High School graduate, receives The Emmitsburg Area Scholarship awarded to residents of the town of Emmitsburg. Ms. Schmidt attends Salisbury University.

Since 1986, the Community Foundation has worked with individuals, families, businesses, associations, and nonprofits to establish charitable funds that benefit a variety of causes, including 195 scholarship funds. The Community Foundation of Frederick County Universal Comprehensive Scholarship Application for the 2010-2011 academic year will be available beginning December 15, 2009 at www.cffredco.org.
