Community Foundation Awards Scholarships to
Brunswick Area Students
September 9, 2009: The Community Foundation recently awarded more than
$330,000 in scholarship funding throughout Frederick County for the
2009-2010 academic year. Over 200 students received scholarships to
pursue their educational dreams, including 17 students from the
Brunswick area:
Thomas Berry, a 2009 Brunswick High School graduate, received The Dr.
Ulysses G. Bourne, Sr. Memorial Scholarship awarded to Frederick
County graduating seniors studying the sciences and pursuing a career
in healthcare. Mr. Berry attends Elon University.
Christopher Coghill, a 2009 Brunswick High School graduate, received
The Lynn and Betty Follin Scholarship awarded to Brunswick High School
graduating seniors who are in good academic standing and have
financial need. Mr. Coghill attends St. Mary’s College of Maryland.
Ryan Derr, a 2009 Brunswick High School graduate, received The Emory
V. and Elizabeth R. Frye Scholarship for Brunswick awarded to
Brunswick High School graduates pursuing a career in education, The
Frederick County Retired School Personnel Association/Dr. Richard and
Patricia Petre Scholarship awarded to Frederick County residents
pursuing a degree in teacher education, The Dr. Warren R.
Evans/Frederick County Physical Education Teachers Scholarship awarded
to Frederick County residents pursuing health education, physical
education, dance education or recreation and The Ryan Patrick Murray
Memorial Scholarship awarded to graduating seniors from Frederick
County who exhibit good character, and participated in varsity
baseball during their senior year. Mr. Derr attends West Virginia
University.
Haley Dozier, a 2009 Brunswick High School graduate, received The Jim
Webb Memorial Point of Rocks Ruritan Scholarship awarded to Frederick
County residents with preference given to students who are members, or
have family members, active with Point of Rocks Ruritan Club or Boy
Scouts of America. Ms. Dozier attends McDaniel College.
Taylor Dunham, a 2009 Brunswick High School graduate, received The
Charles Thomas and Mary Ellen Main Scholarship awarded to Frederick
County residents who show financial need, and academic promise. Mr.
Dunham attends Frederick Community College.
Eric Hoffmaster, a 2009 Brunswick High School graduate, received The
James W. Main Educational Scholarship awarded to graduating Brunswick
High School scholar athletes. Mr. Hoffmaster attends Frostburg State
University.
Robert Hoffmaster, a 2007 Brunswick High School graduate, received The
Joseph B. and Dorothy R. Long Scholarship awarded to Frederick or
Brunswick High School graduates, and The New Forest Society
Scholarship awarded to Frederick County residents pursuing careers in
the environmental sciences. Mr. Hoffmaster attends Frostburg
University.
Timothy Jones, a 2009 Brunswick High School graduate, received The
Michael C. Snyder Memorial Scholarship awarded to students exhibiting
financial need who have participated in Big Brothers Big Sisters of
Frederick County, and The Lisa A. Orndorff Lajewski Memorial
Scholarship awarded to graduates of Brunswick High School or members
of All Saints’ Episcopal Church. Mr. Jones attends Frederick Community
College.
Erin Kelly, a 2008 Brunswick High School graduate, received The U.
Merhl and Margaret T. Hooper Scholarship awarded to Frederick County
students studying at trade or technical schools. Ms. Kelly attends The
Temple.
Jeffrey Lambright, a 2009 Brunswick High School graduate, received The
Emory V. and Elizabeth R. Frye Scholarship for Brunswick awarded to
Brunswick High School graduates pursuing a career in education, and
The Frederick County Retired School Personnel Association Scholarship
awarded to Frederick County residents with financial need who are
pursuing an education degree. Mr. Lambright will continue his
education at Frostburg State University.
Darren Leu, a 2009 Brunswick High School graduate, received The Dinah
Duncan Memorial/Brunswick High School Bandboosters Scholarship awarded
to Brunswick High School graduating seniors who have actively
participated in marching band or color guard for at least three years.
Mr. Leu will be attending St. Mary’s College of Maryland.
Michael Marcoux, a 2006 Brunswick High School graduate, received The
Frederick Community College Graduate Scholarship awarded to Frederick
County residents who have graduated from Frederick Community College
and are continuing their education at a four-year college or
university full-time. Mr. Marcoux attends University of Maryland.
Eleanor McCarthy, a 2009 Brunswick High School graduate, received The
George M. and Gloria E. Merriman Scholarship for Brunswick High School
awarded to Brunswick High School graduating seniors who have
participated in high school varsity baseball or softball. Ms. McCarthy
attends Elizabethtown College.
Michael Minch, a 2008 Brunswick High School graduate, received The
George M. and Gloria E. Merriman Scholarship for Brunswick High School
awarded to Brunswick High School graduating seniors who have
participated in high school varsity baseball or softball. Mr. Minch
attends Shenandoah University.
Genevieve Poist, a 2005 Brunswick High School graduate, received The
Ralph and Annabelle Lenhart Scholarship awarded to Frederick County
students studying the building trades, agriculture, animal science, or
architecture, The Ernest W. Ausherman Scholarship awarded to students
residing in Frederick County, and The Marvin G. Todd Memorial
Scholarship awarded to Brunswick High School graduates who have earned
the “B” award at Brunswick High. Ms. Poist attends University of
Maryland.
Jenilyn Powers, a 2009 Brunswick High School graduate, received The
Claggett Jones Civic Community and Scholarship awarded to students
with a commitment to community service and dedication to pursuing an
education, and The R. Perry and Ethel Beckley Scholarship awarded to
students pursuing any major at the post-secondary institution of their
choice. Ms. Powers will continue her education at Towson University.
Jonathan Weber, a 2009 Brunswick High School graduate, received The
Lisa A. Orndorff Lajewski Memorial Scholarship awarded to graduates of
Brunswick High School or members of All Saints’ Episcopal Church. Mr.
Weber attends St. Mary’s College of Maryland.
Since 1986, the Community Foundation has worked with individuals,
families, businesses, associations, and nonprofits to establish
charitable funds that benefit a variety of causes, including 195
scholarship funds. The Community Foundation of Frederick County
Universal Comprehensive Scholarship Application for the 2010-2011
academic year will be available beginning December 15, 2009 at
