to Benefit MHS
Track and Cross Country Students
June 10, 2009: Track and field and cross country may be the specialties of well-known Middletown High School coaches Don and Sharon Boyer, but they have also become admired role models for countless youth. Their relentless dedication and inspiring encouragement has motivated student-athletes for over 40 years.
“They accept any student, no matter what their ability and make them feel a part of a team, and also make them realize their capabilities,” said Rose Meek, whose two sons have been coached by the Boyers. “What they do really makes a difference in the kids’ lives.”
Their dedication is evident in the breadth of their coaching careers. Don has coached track and field and cross country for 44 years, winning 18 State Championships and 14 State Runner-up team titles. He has also coached in five Deaf Olympics. Sharon has been coaching for 26 years and has won six State Championships and two State Runner-ups in girls cross country, more than any other female coach in Maryland history. And, they have even found time to form Youth Edu-cultural Services, a nonprofit organization promoting international exchanges and trips with hundreds of children from Middletown, Frederick County and the surrounding Maryland and Virginia areas for cultural immersion into foreign cultures.
To honor the Boyers, who have positively impacted the confidence and self-esteem of many youth, and who have coached their teams to an amazing 40+ state championships between them, the Alumni of Middletown High School’s track and field and cross country programs recently created The Don and Sharon Boyer Scholarship Fund with The Community Foundation of Frederick County. The Fund will award scholarships to Middletown High School graduates who have participated in the Boys track and field and cross country programs.
“The Boyers have convinced so many young people, who would otherwise be disengaged, that they can become more involved by joining a team and contributing to something larger than themselves,” says Dale Drum, Middletown High School Track and Field Alumni. “The Don and Sharon Boyer Scholarship Fund is a perfect vehicle to perpetuate their ideals, by benefiting the young people to whom they have lovingly given so much.”
The Boyers said they are honored that others think so highly of them that they wanted to create a scholarship fund in their name. “We are pleased to support the educational goals of a worthy track and field or cross country athlete.”
Those who want to honor the Boyers, who want to make a meaningful difference in the lives of student-athletes seeking a brighter future through education, may make a secure, online donation to The Don and Sharon Boyer Scholarship Fund.
