Community Foundation Awards Music Scholarships
To Area Students

October 28, 2008: In supporting the artistic expression of students from around Frederick County, The Community Foundation of Frederick County recently awarded music scholarships to area elementary, middle, and high school students. Each scholarship has a unique purpose, and offers residents a chance to continue vocal or instrumental training.

The Sperry L. Storm Memorial Scholarship Fund offers scholarships to Frederick County residents in kindergarten through 11th grade for private instruction in vocal or instrumental music performance. The fund honors the memory of Sperry L. Storm, a well-known Frederick County musician who taught music privately for nearly 50 years and worked as a public school music educator for 35 years.

The Sperry L. Storm Memorial Scholarship has been awarded to the following students for the 2008-2009 academic year:

Carrie Holter, a sophomore at Middletown High School, attends violin lessons daily, and also participates in the Frederick Regional Youth Orchestra.

Peter Kordell, a home schooled senior from the Monrovia area, plays the violin for his church and community orchestras.

Susan Lee, a junior at Urbana High School, plays the piano and has played for the Urbana High School band, as well as for the Frederick Children’s Chorus.

Alicia Rodgers, a 6th grader at Brunswick Middle School, plays the piano and has auditioned for membership in the National Federation of Student Musicians.

The Eleanor Harper Music Scholarship Fund provides scholarships to elementary, middle and high school students demonstrating talent and a commitment to pursuing vocal or instrumental music performance, as well as 18 to 22 year olds taking private lessons to enhance career opportunities in these fields. The fund remembers Eleanor Harper, who dedicated her life to performing and teaching music.

The Eleanor Harper Music Scholarship for the 2008-2009 academic year has been awarded to:

Laken Weaver, a Thurmont Middle School student, takes private voice and piano lessons. She is also a member of the Thurmont Middle School Show Choir and Chorus.

Courtney Muse was a bright 13-year-old who loved dancing, country music, playing the piano, and musical theater when she and her brother Dustin died in a December 2006 car accident. The Courtney Muse Music Scholarship is made possible through The Dustin and Courtney Muse Memorial Fund.
