First Grant from Jean Ellis and Florence Guss Memorial Fund Presented to BEACON

Ellis-GussFREDERICK, MD – January 22, 2014:The first grant from The Jean Ellis and Florence Guss Memorial Fund in the amount of $2,500 was presented to Brunswick Ecumenical Assistance Committee on Needs (BEACON). The fund is one of more than 640 component funds of The Community Foundation of Frederick County.

The grant will benefit Brunswick Food Bank, which is operated by BEACON, and currently serves 302 families. “Our mission is to improve the quality of living for our neighbors in need by providing a supplemental supply of food each month,” said Sandy Cox, Brunswick Food Bank Manager. “With unemployment benefits and food stamp checks both being reduced, our food bank is now seeing two to five new client families per week. We could not meet those needs without these generous grants and donors who provide the moral support needed to continue this outreach. The volunteers and clients of the Brunswick Food Bank continue to be inspired by the support and generosity of the great people in Frederick County and we thank you.”

The Jean Ellis and Florence Guss Memorial Fund was created by Tuvy Guss and Tracey Ellis-Guss as a way to honor their mothers who believed in giving back to the community and who instilled the importance of philanthropy in their children. It will provide grants supporting charitable organizations that are addressing a broad spectrum of community needs.
