Community Foundation Mourns Loss of Trustee John R. Ratnavale

ratnavale-trusteeFREDERICK, MD –September 3, 2013: The Community Foundation Board of Trustees and staff mourn the loss of Trustee John R. Ratnavale, CFA on August 23, 2013.

Mr. Ratnavale became a member of the Investment Committee in 2001, served as a trustee beginning in 2005, and became Chairman of the Investment Committee in 2006. He held both volunteer positions until his passing. His contributions as trustee and Investment Committee member and Chairman were extensive. He assisted the Community Foundation in writing its first request for proposals for investment management in 2004. In 2005, he was instrumental in leading the Investment Policy Statement Ad Hoc Committee that facilitated significant changes in the investment policy statement. This policy was used until March 2011, when it was amended again.

Mr. Ratnavale lent his expertise by assisting the staff in the hiring of an investment consultant. He held informational sessions for the Community Foundation Board of Trustees and donors, and volunteered time to meet with fund representatives and nonprofit staff and boards to discuss fund investment and performance. He also met with beneficiaries of Community Foundation planned gifts so that their financial needs could be better met through the trusts investments.

He was instrumental in helping the Community Foundation develop its investments and policies, as well as the oversight of investment managers. Many people complimented him on his ability to explain the technical aspects of investments to laypersons.

Mr. Ratnavale also served one year on the Community Foundation’s Community Outreach Committee, and often assisted staff in representing the Community Foundation for grant and scholarship impact photos.

“John’s contributions to the community and the Community Foundation will not be forgotten,” said Elizabeth Y. Day, Community Foundation President. “He gave of his time and expertise from his heart, because it was important to him to help and make a difference. He will be greatly missed.”
