Thomas J. and Kathleen A. Madden Fund Established at Community Foundation

FREDERICK, MD – March 1, 2016: In honor of his parent’s lifetime of hard work and accomplishments, J. Brendan Madden has established ThomasAndKathleenMadden.resizedThe Thomas J. and Kathleen A. Madden Fund. The fund becomes one of more than 675 component funds managed by The Community Foundation of Frederick County.

The fund will provide financial aid to students pursuing a career in the plumbing industry. This aid includes assisting students with tuition, purchasing tools, and providing funding for training and/or certification exams and continuing education. “The scholarship was created to show that the trades, plumbing in particular, are still noble professions,” said Mr. Madden. “With hard work and determination, young men and women can achieve the American dream just like my parents achieved.”

Thomas Madden immigrated to the United States from County Roscommon, Ireland in 1955. He learned the plumbing trade and became a Master Plumber and worked for several contractors before deciding to open his own business, American Plumbing & Heating, Inc. in 1971. His wife, Kathleen, was the office manager while also raising their seven children. They closed the business in 1985, and Mr. Madden worked as a plumbing inspector for Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission until his retirement in 1997.

Charitable memorial funds are one of the many ways The Community Foundation of Frederick County helps individuals, families, and organizations honor the memory of deceased loved ones by continuing to positively impact lives through grants and scholarships.
