Two grants will provide support for injured and recovering servicemen and women and their families. Operation Second Chance and Semper Fi Fund each received a $1,000 grant. Other grants will be used locally for those in need. Frederick Rescue Mission received a $1,000 grant, Friends of Meals on Wheels received a $2,000 grant, and Heartly House, Blessings in a Backpack, and Friends for Neighborhood Progress each received a $500 grant.
In 2010, Mary Jane McWilliams, John H. Jones, Leonard A. Smith, and Olga Smith created The Sgt. David J. Smith Memorial Fund through the Community Foundation in memory of their son, Sgt. David J. Smith, who was wounded in combat at Helmand Province of Afghanistan and died in Germany due to injuries from serving his country.
To date, The Sgt. David J. Smith Memorial Fund has provided more than $95,000 in grants to nonprofits that assist servicemen and women as they recuperate and re-enter civilian life, and nonprofits that provide basic human needs such as shelter and food, and those with substance addictions. The fund has also provided scholarships totaling $29,500 to students pursuing post-secondary education.
