Community Foundation Fund Established to Support STEM Studies

FREDERICK, MD – June 23, 2015: With the demand for professionals with STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) education growing, The Frederick Center for Research and Education in Science and Technology "CREST" Fund has been established. The fund becomes one of more than 660 component funds of The Community Foundation of Frederick County.

The fund will support the mission and activities of CREST to expand local access to college education in Frederick County. The initial education offerings, slated for fall 2016, are expected to be STEM courses for certification programs and master's level programs. State funding will not support the program until fiscal 2017. Until then, primary funding sources will be from businesses, private individuals, and grants from Frederick County and The City of Frederick. CREST is working closely with local businesses to provide students with hands-on STEM work experience and networking.

Frederick Regional Higher Education Advisory Board is a nonprofit membership organization that was created by the Maryland Legislature in 2013. The Business Roundtable for Education, a program of the Frederick County Chamber of Commerce, has played an active role in promoting business involvement in education in Frederick County. The two entities have partnered together to create the fund supporting CREST.

Since 1986, generous citizens have turned to the credibility and expertise of the Community Foundation to establish funds that provide scholarships to students and grants to nonprofit organizations, contributing more than $38 million throughout Frederick County.
