Petronchak Fund Grant Supports FCC Police Science Program
FREDERICK, MD – June 18, 2015: The Police Science Program at Frederick Community College recently received a $3,000 grant from The Garrett R. Petronchak Memorial Fund. The fund is one of more than 660 funds managed by The Community Foundation of Frederick County.
The grant will be used to purchase GoPro® cameras to enrich teaching and learning for Maryland State Police students enrolled in the police science program. The cameras will support a broad range of program applications, such as review of trooper training to properly dissect and analyze miscues, and in conjunction with forensic biology class material. In addition, the cameras will be used to review public speaking presentations from both the presenter and audience perspectives and for recording short videos that can be incorporated into class assignments to provide visual interest.
Garrett Petronchak's life was taken in an alcohol-related car accident in 1995. He was a graduate of Walkersville High School and attended Frederick Community College. Garrett's mother, Peggy Waxter, established the fund to provide grants for programs relating to the enforcement of underage drinking laws, including books and materials for police academies. In addition, the fund provides scholarships to graduating high school seniors who participate in activities and projects relating to substance abuse prevention or education.
Charitable memorial funds are one of the many ways The Community Foundation of Frederick County helps individuals, families, and organizations honor the memory of deceased loved ones by continuing to positively impact lives through grants and scholarships.
