Scholarship Fund Established in Memory of The Honorable Mary Ann Stepler
FREDERICK, MD – May 14, 2015: A new scholarship fund in memory of a Frederick County judge has been established by her family. The Honorable Mary Ann Stepler Memorial Scholarship Fund becomes one of more than 660 component funds managed by The Community Foundation of Frederick County. The fund will provide scholarships for residents of Maryland who are pursuing undergraduate education in the areas of law, music, or the arts.
Judge Stepler's professional accomplishments were significant. After a brief career in journalism, she was admitted to the bar in 1974 and formed a law practice with her husband. From 1980 through 1982, she served as Associate Judge of the Frederick County District Court, and was the first woman in Western Maryland to do so. During her career, she also served as Assistant State's Attorney for Frederick County, and Associate Judge for the Circuit Court for Frederick County. Judge Stepler was also an avid musician, gardener, and collector of vintage items and antiques.
Judge Stepler's family said "This fund has been created to honor Mary Ann and her love of the law and the arts. She had a positive impact on Frederick County and the state of Maryland, and blazed the trail for women through her successful law career. As a well-rounded individual, she was very involved in both visual and performing arts. Our hope is that Mary Ann's legacy will carry on by providing financial assistance to students pursuing higher education in these fields."
Charitable memorial funds are one of the many ways The Community Foundation of Frederick County helps individuals, families, and organizations honor the memory of deceased loved ones by continuing to positively impact lives through grants and scholarships.
