It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year

Betsy.Day.2014.smallMost of you have heard the popular holiday song, “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year.” It was written in 1963 by Edward Pola and George Wyle, and recorded and released by Andy Williams. It’s still played every year, and hasn’t lost any sparkle during its 54 year run. In fact, it’s considered one of the music industry’s holiday standards for the season. READ MORE

During the Community Foundation’s first scholarship “season” in 1991, 87 students received scholarships totaling $54,000. Our scholarships haven’t lost any sparkle either in its 26 year run, and I believe they have become brighter every year as they illuminate each student’s quest for education. I also believe that scholarships created through generous donors and administered by the Community Foundation have become a Frederick County standard.

Now, in 2017, we are ready to present more than $900,000 in scholarships for post-secondary and vocational training for the 2017-2018 academic year to nearly 300 students. The scholarship application is live and open, and anyone who will be engaging in post-secondary study or vocational training this fall is eligible to apply. This includes those graduating from high school in May, those already enrolled in college or other training, or “non-traditional” students – those who are beginning or returning to school later in their life. Visit for details.

Scholarship donors make all of this possible, and I will take this opportunity to thank them again. Without their commitment to higher education, many students wouldn’t be able to go to school and improve their employment options.

I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the 80+ volunteers who will be reviewing the expected 1,300 plus scholarship applications that we will receive by the end of March. These folks put in many hours to review and score applications. We wouldn’t be able to have such a successful scholarship program if it weren’t for them, and we’re very grateful that they are a part of the program.

It’s (one of) the most wonderful times of the year here, because we love presenting scholarships. It’s For Good. Forever. For Frederick County.
