"If I Had A Million Dollars...."

Betsy.Day.2014.small“If I had a million dollars, I’d..............” How many times have you heard someone say this and then fill in the blank with their vision of how they would spend that much money? How many times have YOU said this? Well, I’m really happy because starting March 30, I CAN say it and fill in the blank: “The Community Foundation has a million dollars that’s going to be given out in post-secondary scholarships!” READ MORE....

Thanks to the generous donors of Frederick County who believe in the value of education and who want to help those pursuing post-secondary education and vocational training, the Community Foundation’s scholarship monies for the 2016-2017 academic year have reached the $1 million mark for the first time in its nearly 30-year history.

I can’t wait. I can’t wait for the 1,000+ applications we’re expecting. I can’t wait for the hard-working scholarship committee to review the applications, and I can’t wait for the award emails to reach the students who will benefit from the scholarships. It’s an exciting time each year in our office as this process takes place. If you know a student who could benefit from a scholarship, or if you are one yourself, here’s the pertinent details:

-The online application opens March 30, 2016 and can be accessed at www.ScholarshipsFrederickCounty.com

-Details and information on what you can do to prepare can be found at www.ScholarshipsFrederickCounty.com

-The online application closes at 11:59 p.m. on April 30, 2016.Scholarship money can be used to pay tuition, room and board, books, and other fees.

A special note about the definition of “student.” Students can be anyone graduating from high school this spring, students already enrolled in post-secondary education or vocational training, and students who might be returning to school, or starting their post-secondary education “non-traditionally” at a later age. And, there are scholarships for almost any field of study you can think of, as well as scholarships that are based on financial need, and scholarships that don’t have financial need as a requirement.

I hope you are as excited as I am about this year’s $1 million in scholarship money. I can’t wait to tell you next year how we’ll fill in the blank. It’s For Good. Forever. For Frederick County.
