Scholarships, scholarships, scholarships

Betsy.Day.2014.smallThis has been an exciting scholarship "season" at the Community Foundation. Two hundred seventy-six students have been awarded 371 scholarships totaling just over $833,000 for the 2015-2016 academic year. Music and dance scholarships are being finalized now, and by July, the total scholarship amount will increase to more than $850,000.

Why has the scholarship season been exciting? Isn't it always exciting? Yes, each year is exciting as we congratulate a new group of students who are setting out to expand their education and work towards a career path. We love the student's enthusiasm and the anticipation they have of the new things to come. This year has been even more exciting because more scholarship funding was available for the 2015-2016 academic year. As a result, the minimum scholarship awarded was $1,000, and many students received awards significantly higher than this. This has been possible because of generous donors who, through helping students obtain education that will help them be successful, are giving back to their community in this way.

The Community Foundation's Scholarship Committee, totaling more than 80 volunteers, has been excited, too. They are committed to the task (each volunteer gives an average of 50 hours of service throughout the process) and they believe strongly in the value of post-secondary education. I will take this opportunity to publically thank them, as they are truly the unsung heroes of the scholarship process.

Now, as a result of the increase in scholarship funding, it's exciting to me that we need to recruit about 30 more scholarship committee volunteers to serve in the spring of 2016. This is a great "problem" to have. The number of applications continues to increase each year, requiring more volunteers. It does take time, but it's a rewarding process.

To become a volunteer on this committee, you need have access to an internet-connected computer, and the ability to receive and send email and open attachments. You'll need to attend a training session, and may need to attend several meetings in-person to select scholars. I hope you'll get excited with me about all that is happening in the world of scholarships at the Community Foundation. I can't wait until next year to do it again.
